Infant Loss Support Program to Begin Feb. 16

Hospice of Randolph County & Naylen’s Hope to Host

Asheboro, NC - Families grieving the loss of an infant or preborn baby will soon have a resource and a safe place to share their loss and find comfort and support with others who are struggling to walk through this devastating experience. Beginning Thursday, February 16 at 6:30 PM, a support group will be launched to address the experiences of miscarriage, stillbirth, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and premature and full-term infant losses. The group will meet at Hospice of Randolph County, located at 416 Vision Drive in Asheboro and will continue to meet on the third Thursday each month.

Initially the group will be co-facilitated by Jennell Cardin and Tim Pheagin. Cardin is the founder of Naylen’s Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers support to families devastated by SIDS losses, while also educating the public about the risk factors related to SIDS and advocating for families coping with this and other perinatal losses. Naylen’s Hope was named for Cardin’s two-month-old daughter Naylen, who was a victim of SIDS in 2006. Pheagin is a pastoral care provider who has been with Hospice of Randolph County for nearly fifteen years.

The formation of this support group comes as a response to a number of requests from parents, grandparents and referring healthcare providers who see the need, but have had no local resource for group support.

“We want to offer a comfortable, safe place where surviving parents and family members can listen to others who share their own experiences and challenges, and – when they are ready to do so – share their own,” said Pheagin. “We want people to feel that their pain is being heard, in a non-judgmental environment where no one tries to change the subject, no one tries to tell them to “move on,” but where the language of pain and devastation are spoke and understood fluently.”

Pheagin goes on to say that the aim is to help individuals articulate what they are feeling, and to talk about issues that accompany the loss of a baby. The loss of a child, at any age, is a deeply painful, complex and traumatic experience. Survivors are left with an endless array of brutally intense emotions and unanswered questions. Fathers and mothers often struggle with different things, and sometimes their communication becomes strained, leaving them feeling unsupported by each other.

Trying to make sense of the loss is always a part of the struggle. Well-meaning friends can muddy the waters with misguided attempts to be helpful. Or they may simply stay away because they “don’t know what to say.” To that concern, Pheagin simply urges people to “understand, first of all, that it’s not about you or your comfort level. You don’t have to know what to say. No one this side of heaven has a satisfying answer to this tragedy. Your willingness to be there, to listen, to allow the grieving parents to feel what they’re feeling, and not change the subject is so important. They won’t remember what you said, but the will remember that you were there. Or that you were not.”

There is no charge for participation. For more information contact either Hospice of Randolph County at 336-672-9300 (tim.pheagin@hospiceofrandolph.org), or Jennell Cardin at 336-940-7104 (JCardin@naylenshope.com).

Asheboro, NC – Hospice of Randolph County is glad to announce its 6th annual offering of the bereavement event entitled “Surviving Hearts”. This special program is designed for those who are grieving the loss of a spouse and correlates with the Valentine’s Day season.

Dr. Rodney Otwell, Hospice Chaplain, commented on the program: “The loss of a life’s partner is unlike any other loss we will face in life. So much of our identity and personal history is wrapped up in the person to whom we commit to share our lives. When that person dies, we not only lose them, we lose a part of ourselves. The task of mourning well is doing the work necessary to rediscover who we are in light of such a significant loss.”

Randolph County, NC- Hospice of Randolph County(HRC) announced today that vendors are being accepted for their spring event to be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The 2nd Annual Southern Home & Garden Showcase, benefiting Hospice of Randolph County, will be hosted once again by the Petty’s Garage and the Petty Family Foundation at their historic garage located in Level Cross. Show organizers will continue to build on the great success and popularity of last year’s event and hours will be 9am to 5pm. Modeled after other home shows across North Carolina, the Hospice show will bring vendors & crafters to Randolph County while offering a southern flare. There will be 50 prime indoor spaces at the Petty Garage where exhibitors will be able to have promotional & sales displays for building additions & remodeling, repairs, lawn mowers, pools & spas, appliances, interior design, home entertainment & amusements, gardening/landscaping and outdoor crafts such as birdhouses, fountains, furniture and all things pertaining to home and garden. There will also be outdoor spaces available for those needing additional room for their displays. Exhibitor fees are $175/inside and $150/outside with access to electrical hook-ups for an additional $25 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Admission tickets will be $5.00 each and will benefit the new Randolph Hospice House, Randolph County’s only specialized hospice inpatient facility. “This is an exciting partnership with the Petty family,” states David Caughron, Director of Marketing & Development for Hospice of Randolph County. “The Petty’s have been long-time supporters of our organization in our mission of providing world-class hospice care throughout Randolph County as well as neighboring communities.” Petty’s Garage plans to have an array of their customized cars on display for the show as well as some of the cars that Richard Petty himself has collected over the years. The Petty Family Foundation will also be on hand with specialty items for sell to benefit their non-profit foundation. Hollins Exposition Services of Greensboro will be providing the professional backdrops and skirting between the inside booths. Each vendor will have a 10’ by 8’ space with signage of business name and receive a 6-foot draped table and 2 chairs. The event is being organized & chaired by Kathy Wright, Special Events Coordinator for HRC. Visitors attending the show this year will also have an opportunity to purchase an additional $5.00 ticket for an chance to win a Myrtle Beach Timeshare at “The Yachtsman Resort”, located right on the new boardwalk. This beautiful 1-bedroom efficiency is a great opportunity to have a vacation get-away at one of the most popular destinations on the east coast. Annual homeowner association dues will apply and be the responsibility of the person winning the timeshare.

Asheboro, NC- Recently, Hospice of Randolph County completed phase 2 of their specialized inpatient facility…The Randolph Hospice House. This state of-the-art facility, which is the first and only one of it’s kind in Randolph County, opened in January 2011. Phase one of the project included 10 private patient rooms, two family rooms, a library, chapel, and a patient/family dining room. To meet the needs of a growing community, Hospice of Randolph County applied for and received a Certificate of Need from the State of North Carolina to add another wing with an additional 6 patient rooms and family sunroom. A special feature of the new wing is a mural painted by well-known artist Susan Harrell. This unique piece of art joins other works from the piedmont triad area including a fountain designed by Seagrove Potter Daniel Johnston. The fountain is in a tranquil setting of a memory walk garden to benefit the patients and family members while helping put their minds and souls at ease. These special amenities are meant to add warmth and comfort to patients and families in a “home-like” setting as they are receiving medical care for chronic and life-limiting illnesses.

With the addition of this new wing, it brings this healthcare facility to 19,000 sq. ft. of 24 hour quality hospice care for Randolph County and surrounding communities. The house expands on the services that Hospice of Randolph County has provided for 28 years now, serving as the leader in hospice care for Randolph County. In addition to the expansion of this first-class venue, the organization is proud to announce Candy Hunter, RN, BSN, as the new Director of the Randolph Hospice House. Hunter grew up in Asheboro and graduated from Asheboro City Schools. She graduated from the RCC School of Nursing in 2002 and went directly to High Point Regional Hospital and worked on telemetry for 3 years. Next, Hunter came to Randolph Hospital and after working there for a couple of years, became a Nursing Supervisor and worked with their transitional unit and ICU. Candy continued her education with additional classes and in December of 2010, obtained her BSN degree at Winston-Salem State University. She resides in Asheboro with her husband Ryan and son Jake. Hunter recently stated, “This has been such a rewarding job for me in the short time I have been here. Hospice care warms my heart as a nurse and I am so honored to be part of such a wonderful agency as Hospice of Randolph County.”
