The ‘Hospice 100 Walk’ Project
A place where compassion lives, where families find peace and where hope never dies…

Hospice of Randolph County (HRC) is proud to introduce a new campaign offering donors the opportunity to sponsor an engraved brick paver in honor or memory of someone special.
Located at the new Randolph Hospice House on Vision Drive, the focal point of this serene area is a fountain designed by Seagrove Potter Daniel Johnston. The engraved pavers will be offered to the first one hundred donors at a special price of $100 per brick. These unique bricks lining the border of the walk will recognize your loved ones and leave lasting memories for years to come while assisting Hospice of Randolph County in their mission of providing quality care and services for patients and their families.
In a tranquil garden setting where the sound of a flowing fountain will help put your mind and soul at ease, your support of this peaceful “Memory Walk” is appreciated. At Hospice of Randolph County, no one journeys the path of serious illness alone.
For more information about how you can be part of the Hospice 100 Memory Walk, contact HRC by calling (336) 672-9300 or complete the Hospice 100 Walk Sponsorship Form and mail along with check or money order to 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC 27203.
Program for Grieving Spouses Set for Feb 15th
Hospice of Randolph County is glad to announce its 5th annual offering of the bereavement event entitled “Surviving Hearts”. This special program is designed for those who are grieving the loss of a spouse and correlates with the Valentine’s Day season.
Dr. Rodney Otwell, Hospice Chaplain, commented on the program: “The loss of a life’s partner is unlike any other loss we will face in life. So much of our identity and personal history is wrapped up in the person to whom we commit to share our lives. When that person dies, we not only lose them, we lose a part of ourselves. The task of mourning well is doing the work necessary to rediscover who we are in light of such a significant loss.”
The evening will consist of an educational component as well as time for personal reflection and feedback from the group and facilitator. This special program will be held on Tuesday, February 15 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. For more information or to RSVP, contact Dr. Otwell at (336) 672-9300. Local Student Holding Book Drive to Benefit Kids Path
Chrissy Parker, a student at Southwestern Randolph High School, is hosting a book-drive to benefit the children served by Kids Path®, a local pediatric service offered by Hospice of Randolph County.
Parker is holding the book-drive in correlation with her involvement in the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce Student L.I.F.T. program – a program designed to educate local sophomores and juniors about Randolph County and prepare them as future leaders in the local community.
Chrissy decided to focus on the Kids Path program because her mother, Julie Parker, works for Hospice of Randolph County as a nursing assistant. Kids Path provides home health care to children who have chronic or life-threatening illnesses, and also provides grief support services to children who are coping with issues related a recent loss.
In order to meet her goal of 500 books, Parker is asking the public to donate new or gently-used children’s books by dropping them off at one of the following locations: Southwestern Randolph High School, Hospice of Randolph County and West Asheboro Baptist Church – all located in Asheboro. The books should be geared towards children – including storybooks, coloring books, infant-level books, etc. The last day to donate books will be March 7th.
For more information about the book-drive, please contact Hospice of Randolph County at (336) 672-9300 or by email at info@hospiceofrandolph.org. Information about the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce Student L.I.F.T program can be found on their website at www.chamber.asheboro.com.

Volunteer opportunities also exist for those interested in helping with special events and fundraisers.
An “interest” meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hospice campus, located at 416 Vision Drive in Asheboro. Light refreshments will be available. If you have commitment, courage and compassion – WE WANT YOU!

Hospice of Randolph County Expands Staff and Services
Hospice of Randolph County is proud to announce the addition of new services offered by the organization through its new Randolph Hospice House as well as the addition of new staff.
Considered the model for quality compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness, Hospice of Randolph County provides expert medical care, pain management, as well as emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient’s needs and wishes. An emphasis is also placed on providing support to the patient’s loved ones and caregivers.
The hospice philosophy focuses on caring, not curing. Hospice care is available to patients with any terminal diagnosis, regardless of age, religion or race. In most cases, hospice care is provided at home, in hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The newest locations that provide these specialized services are hospice inpatient care facilities such as the new state-of-the-art home that is now located here in Randolph County.
The new Randolph Hospice House will include staff made up of a medical director, facility director, nurses, nursing aids, social workers, bereavement counselors, clergy or other spiritual counselors as well as trained volunteers.
One of the newest staff members to join the hospice family of caregivers is Dr. Scott Murkin. The new Medical Director for Hospice of Randolph County, Dr. Murkin, completed his premedical education at Illinois Wesleyan University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in biology. Upon finishing his medical education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, he was named Family Practice “Student of the Year” before graduating. After completing medical school, Dr. Murkin did his internship and residency in family medicine through Duke University’s community health program at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, NC, where he served as Chief Resident his final year there. He has maintained his board certification in Family Medicine since then.
Dr. Murkin and his family moved to Asheboro in 1995 to join White Oak Family Physicians, where he practiced medicine for all ages from delivering babies to following senior patients into local nursing homes. In 1998, he became Medical Director of White Oak Urgent Care. In 2010, Dr. Murkin left White Oak and assisted in founding a new urgent care clinic in High Point, known as Doctors Express. He is very active in our local arts community having served on the board of directors of Randolph Arts Guild and the Randolph Quilters Guild, as well as supporting local community theatre, NC Zoo Society and the Friends of the Randolph County Libraries. Many people know him as an artist in his own right. He exhibits his own textile art locally, nationally and internationally. He has also had the opportunity to travel the country judging quilt shows as a nationally certified quilt judge.
Dr. Murkin is excited to be part of a world-class hospice team that has shown a strong commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to those with life-limiting illnesses. “While our commitment to home care remains as strong as ever, the opening of Randolph Hospice House will be another piece in the puzzle of being able to meet the community needs of having as many options as possible for end-of-life care,” states Murkin. “It is an honor to be invited into people’s lives at this important time and help them navigate an often difficult road.”
With this new venue now available, Dr. Scott Murkin will lead this new care team in continuing the quality and specialized care that Hospice of Randolph County has become known for over the past 27 years.
